The benefits of a home management notebook are many. To be completely honest, I really did not even know what a home management notebook was several years ago. I have always been a very organized person. Organizing is something I have been working on perfecting year after year. I often assess and reassess how I get things done so that I can try to work smarter, not harder.

During one of these evaluations, I realized that my list making skills needed a revamp. I was very good at writing things down, but I needed a system that could incorporate large tasks, weekly to-dos, daily things I had to accomplish….the list literally goes on.

Once I started to keep everything together, I was able to be a lot more productive in less time. This is where my true love of home management notebooks began.

Now that you have everything in one place, the entire family can and should be able to access all of your information and use it to improve the flow of the family. My notebook stays in the same place, and my family knows what is included in the notebook. We even had a family meeting to discuss the use of the notebook and how it could help our entire family.

Now when my teenage daughter wants to add a few things to the grocery list, she knows exactly where to go. I don’t have to try to read her mind as to what she needs in the kitchen to prepare her meals. It is a huge time saver for our family, and it has improved communication tenfold.

When she wanted to add some items to her walls to decorate, we got out the project planner to discuss her needs, her budget, and her execution of this plan. It was awesome to put a plan together. Now that we have a plan, and things are pretty organized, we have more time to enjoy each other! This has been one of the greatest benefits of using a Home Management Notebook. Everything is written down and organized, and I no longer worry that I am forgetting something. I also know that I have a plan to tackle larger projects. These projects don’t cloud my thinking any longer because I know I won’t forget them, but I also know I have a plan to get to them eventually.

Before using a home management notebook, I would hurriedly get through tasks so that I would not forget to complete them. I was wasting valuable time I could have spent with my family trying to get everything off of my to-do list. Now that things are written down, I honestly can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that it is on a list, I will get to it, and I have a plan to get to it. And no, it doesn’t need to be completed today. I have really enjoyed the freedom this has brought to my life!

Save Money

A huge benefit of using a home management notebook is that you can save A LOT of money. When you have a plan, and you execute your plan, you have all of the pieces of the puzzle that you need. For example, I have used my home binder to really save on grocery expenses. Every Sunday, I plan the meals for the week. Then, I reference my kitchen inventories to see what I have on hand. This really helps avoid purchasing excess food or wasting things that need to be used up.

After that is checked off, I plan my grocery list and I stick to it! I know what I am making for the week, I know the items I need, and I purchase only the items I need. Before I had a plan, I would go to the grocery store every few days and add a bunch of items that I thought I needed. I would get home and honestly not even have the ingredients to make one balanced meal! Ugh! What a waste of money!

I also keep track of my monthly expenses in my Home Management Binder. This has been extremely helpful in terms of our family budgeting and planning. I know exactly how much we spent on groceries, the utilities, clothing, etc. I use this information to make a plan moving forward for the next month. When we talk as a family, I reference what I have found and we talk about how we can improve for the next month.

Less Stress

The concept of less stress goes hand in hand when considering the benefits of a Home Management Notebook. When everything is written down in one centralized spot, there is no longer a need to search through endless papers to find the information you want. You can further clear your mind of mental clutter when everything is written down. Money-saving benefits will eliminate budgeting stress that is everpresent in our lives. Knowing your plan and working your plan is extremely freeing.

Once Established, Upkeep is minimal

Once you have your system of tasks and lists in place, the upkeep of this system is minimal. There are many things that will only need yearly updating, such as school information and some contact information.

Other items will need updating weekly. Since the lists are works in progress, you will never be starting from scratch in creating these lists.

There is the movement of items in order of priority, shuffling of information occasionally, but once the initial work is completed, it becomes maintenance and upkeep. Thus, you no longer have to recreate the wheel every few months!
